(Rejected by the Washington Times, my first submission to the Times and I don’t really know what their guidelines are, so it was a shot in the dark, I haven’t heard anything back from them so I haven’t really learned anything either, in any case it’s not a great piece)
Charles blow is a political shrieker. His latest Op-ED for the NYT is quite simply a hysterical anti Trump rant. It’s getting harder to understand the actual content of the leftist opposition to Trump with each passing day. Because there doesn’t seem to be much content. If you waste several minutes of your previous life to read Blow’s attempt at “writing” it becomes obvious that he is not referring to the current POTUS but a boogeyman that lives on the other side of the magical ice wall guarding the seven kingdoms of Westeros. And just like that horrific fantasy setting Blow has joined an imaginary Night’s Watch called the “Resistance” and he’ll be damned before he lets the “others” through. The “others” being Trump and the Republicans of course.
Every political party makes a claim against the others. This is just life. If one business opens another may have to close. Politics is about the marketplace of intellectual ideas. As a leftist it is Blow’s job to oppose Trump where and when they disagree. But there’s opposing and then there’s OPPOSING. Or rather there is opposing and then there is irrational resisting. And resisting in this manner is simply poor salesmanship in the political marketplace. Because they are not attempting to sell their views, they do not desire to persuade, they are acting like a baby throwing a tantrum. Eventually if they scream loud and hard enough they think their codependent parents will acquiesce.
And like a child throwing a tantrum there simply is no reasoning with Blow’s latest column. It barely makes sense. To put it politely, it is stupid. It belongs on WordPress not the NYT. But what’s worse about Blow is he simply is not helping. No one who reads him or sees his hysterics on TV stops to think “maybe he’s right?” They either already agree and throw up their hands to the great Marx in the sky crying “hallelujah preach rev!” or they think “this man is unbalanced.” If he cared about actually helping the country (something he claims every single person who does not oppose Trump with the same idiotic vigor he does is not doing) Blow would seek to make a coherent winsome case against Trump’s policies. It isn’t all that hard to do. Ben Shapiro does it almost every day.
Just like every POTUS Trump needs real opposition. Real accountability. I voted for him but I did so with deep hesitation and I dislike and disagree with about 70% of who he is and what he does. But voting for anyone should require some level of hesitation. Unfortunately Blow and journalists like him did not and do not hesitate to oppose Trump. To them he is a movie monster and apparently they believe they can escape his dark clutches by screaming louder than anyone else. I want the media to hold Trump accountable, to succeed where they failed so miserably with Obama. That is what makes Blow’s writing so disturbing. Whenever the NYT, Washington Post, CNN, or MSNBC gives space in their pages or time on their air to this sort of nonsense they are enabling Trump.
“This latest episode is simply part of a body of work demonstrating the man’s utter contempt for decency. We all know what it will add up to: nothing.”
He is referring to Trump’s ridiculous comments concerning Joe & Mika of MSNBC. But what I don’t understand is that if all this amounts to is “nothing” then why write about it? Clearly he does not think it amounts to nothing, especially since he immediately went on to say:
“Republicans have bound themselves up with Trump. His fate is their fate. They have surrendered any moral authority to which they once laid claim — rightly or not. If Trump goes down, they all do.”
In other words Blow thinks quite a lot will come of all this. He thinks, despite all evidence to the contrary, that the Republican Party is going down. That’s not nothing. That’s quite a big deal. And one that Blow would probably celebrate with glee. If he really wants to help the country he should take his own advice and “Step back from the daily onslaughts of insanity” and “remind ourselves” of the “devastating truth” that journalism is hard work. And living in a truly free society is even harder work. But if we are not up to this task we will fall victim to Lincoln’s immortal words contained in his great Lyceum speech and die by suicide.
A Patriotic NYT would criticize every POTUS based on logic and evidence. A Patriotic NYT would seek to bring more light than heat. A Patriotic NYT would tone down the rhetoric and turn up the truth. Its time to stop shrieking and get some actual journalism done.
